Alaska Society of Addiction Medicine

Treat Addiction. Save Lives.

doctor-hands-writing-prescription-at-table

Our objective at the Alaska Society of Addiction Medicine is to improve the care and treatment of people with the disease of addiction and advance the practice of Addiction Medicine.

Treatment decisions on the use of FDA-approved medication for substance abuse should be made only by skilled healthcare providers.

Treatment for substance abuse is not something that medication alone can provide.  Consultation with a skilled healthcare provider who understands the disease of addiction and more importantly the recovery process is the best approach to treatment.

Welcome to AKSAM

Greetings, AKSAM members,

Welcome to the Alaska Society of Addiction Medicine (AKSAM)

This site is intended to be a space for seeking and exchanging timely information among addictionists, and associated and allied professionals. The site is dedicated to increasing access to and improving the quality of addiction treatment, educating physicians, other medical professionals, and the public, supporting research and prevention and promoting the appropriate role of physicians in the care of patients with addiction.

Ideally, it will be a space where members can respectfully discuss essential and emerging issues in addiction science, addiction medicine, and addiction policy. The site will also serve to create a forum that provides cohesiveness and collaboration to address your needs as you provide lifesaving and life-changing care to individuals suffering from substance or process use disorders.

ASAM Fellow Designation

ASAM’s Fellow designation gives recognition to and raises awareness of ASAM members who are board certified addiction specialists. ASAM Fellows are able to use the FASAM designation after their name and use the special ASAM Fellow logo on certain pre-authorized items. To qualify for the FASAM designation, physicians must be members of ASAM for two consecutive years and be currently certified in Addiction Medicine.

Journal of Addiction Medicine

Published six times per year, the Journal of Addiction Medicine is the official journal of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. It is currently ranked tenth in the Substance Abuse category of the 2012 Journal Citation Reports’ Science Edition. The Journal is designed for all physicians and other mental health professionals who need to keep up-to-date with the treatment of addiction disorders. Under the guidance of an esteemed Editorial Board, peer-reviewed articles published in the Journal focus on developments in addiction medicine as well as on treatment innovations and ethical, economic, forensic, and social topics.

CME Hours

ASAM members enjoy unique educational opportunities designed to increase knowledge and keep up with the latest addiction medicine information. Members can take advantage of exclusive member pricing on hundreds of CME hours online and by live courses throughout the year. Members also receive a 20% discount on ASAM publications.

Networking

Local events, courses and meetings provide opportunities to network, and develop lifelong professional relationships. ASAM State Chapters provide networking, service, and professional learning opportunities for our members across the nation.

Advocacy

ASAM serves its members in many ways. One of the most important ways is by helping members play an active role in shaping government policies that affect their livelihoods and the lives of their patients. ASAM advocates for policies that promote access to high-quality prevention, treatment, and recovery support services for the millions of Americans who suffer from a substance use disorder.

Awards & Scholarships

ASAM offers a wide variety of award and recognition programs for members and those contributing to the field of addiction medicine.

Your membership in AKSAM automatically enrolls you as a member of ASAM, our national organization, and you will enjoy the many benefits of being a member of both.
